The Story of Small Group Coaching
Fifteen years ago, after a lifetime of debilitating stage fright,
I developed the revolutionary Speaking Circle approach to authentic
speaking. My performance anxiety dissolved (a miracle!), and I
traveled the world spreading my message and method. Speaking Circles
International has now trained over 250 Certified Facilitators in ten
countries. In 1996 I self-published Be Heard Now! How to Compel Rapt Attention
Every Time You Speak, and in 1998 it was picked up by Broadway Books.
An audiotape version was produced the next year by Sounds True.
Flowing from the basic principle of Relational Presence with
a group, I evolved a step-by-step system that allows a person to build
a powerful talk easily and naturally, within their own personality and
strengths, without performing.
Using this revolutionary system, I coach professionals one-on-one
and in groups in talk development. On the bottom of this page you can
see some of their comments on the impact of our work together.
Until recently I hadn't imagined that I could get great results
with small group coaching on the telephone. But it works! There
seems to be something dynamic and synergistic in working this way on
the phone, where there is no self-consciousness. Participants get a
lot accomplished, are open to incisive coaching, and learn from each
other.
Group Structure and Fees
The basic small group coaching course is three weekly ninety-minute sessions
with only 8 participants, so you will get significant personal attention.
The fee is $150.
The prerequisite for this class is either Speaking
Circle experience or attendance at the foundational teleclass
Masterful Public Speaking, which is offered free on a monthly basis.
The calls are conducted through a telephone bridge line which you
can access from anywhere in the world. I conduct all the calls personally. In each session, I present a teaching and answer questions. Then participants
have equal time to work with me in specific talk development. The silent
support of the others is crucial, and much of the learning is in this
listening!
At the end of your time I'll have an assignment for you to work on
for the next weekly session. If anything is unclear to you before the
phone session is completed, I will be available by email between sessions.
The Promise
By the end of this first three-session series, you will understand
step-by-step how to put together a masterful talk opening that compels
rapt attention from the moment you begin to speak. Within this opening
will be the blueprint of the body of your talk. Note: This system works for a talk of any length, even as short as
5 minutes, or as a way to open a workshop or seminar of any length.
After this series, you are eligible to register for Develop
an Effective Talk - II, in which we work on the structure and content
of the body of the talk.

- How to construct and deliver a talk thriving with the life and electricity
of your own "essential knowing" -- your raw wisdom gained
from life experience
- How to develop an opening story from a personal life moment
- How to access juicy life moments for use throughout your talk
- How to deliver the opening line of your talk without performing
so that your listeners move to the edge of their seats
- How to tell your opening story clearly and completely, without rushing,
in less than two minutes.
- How to transition from the story to why you are here in a way that
grabs the hearts, minds, and souls of your listeners.
- How to create a 3-sentence agenda that are the headlines for the body
of your talk. (The 3-part body of your talk will simply be the expansion
of each of these headlines!)
- How to end your opening with a promise you are confident you can keep.
In addition, you will get copious reinforcement of the Relational Presence
delivery principle laid out at the foundational teleclass.
